The Government of Pakistan has allowed private investors to invest in Government Securities. The State Bank of Pakistan has already issued a circular on the behalf of government providing guidelines to the prospective customers. The customers will purchase the government securities like PIBs, Treasury bills, Ijara Sukuk or any other such securities issued by State Bank of Pakistan. SBP has also instructed the commercial banks and other financial institutions offering to open IPS accounts to their customers; to devise internal guidelines.

Critics of the Government consider these steps as a desperate measure to get borrowings by the government from general public/investors. On the other hand, this might help in controlling increasing inflation. Considering the current economic situation of the country, the investors will be more interested in investing in government backed securities, despite of their low rate of return than investing in other high risk projects.
