Dr. Shamshad Akhtar the former Governor State Bank of Pakistan is being appointed as the new head of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia- Pacific region. Ms. Akhtar since 2012 has served as the Secretary-General’s Senior Advisor on Economic Development and Finance and as Asst. Secretary General in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
She is a renowned economist with broad experience of 30+ years; with an impressive track record of achievements in the fields of economic, development and finance both at country and international level.
Ms. Akhtar also has a broad experience in dealing, advising and structuring operations across a number of countries in Asia region. She has also remained involved in a number of regional cooperation forums including Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). She has also served with the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
ESCAP works to overcome Asia region’s greatest challenges by providing projects, technical assistance and capacity building to member countries in areas like trade and investment, transport, social development, and environment and sustainable development. The body comprises of 53 Member States and 9 Associate Members.
